What is Families in Transition?
The Families in Transition program is designed to provide parents and children (between the ages of 8-16) with practical information to cope effectively with problems that result from divorce.
What are the effects of divorce on children?
- Parental separation and divorce is a painful experience for children, and it creates many changes in their lives.
- Children experience feelings such as guilt, anger, embarrassment, disbelief, fear, and grief.
- Children will have many divorce-related questions:
“Why are you getting divorced?”
“Will I ever see Dad/Mom again?”
“Did I do something to cause the divorce?”
“What will happen to us?”
“What should I tell my friends?”
How does Families in Transition differ from other divorce-adjustment programs?
- The Families in Transition program provides more practical information on dealing with the effects of divorce.
- Classes are designed for both parents and children.
- Both parents attend separate class sessions
Why is the Families in Transition program required by the court?
When parents are able to work cooperatively to meet the needs of their children, it decreases the likelihood that they will return to court to resolve their differences.
What is the cost?
There is a $115 fee for each parent (payable by money order or cashier’s check only-no personal checks or cash will be accepted), with no charge for children. If you are a TANF, food stamps or Medicaid recipient or on permanent disability, the fee is reduced after verification.
When is the class offered?
The program is held at Franklin Community Middle School two Saturdays a month from 9:00a.m.-3:00p.m. and every other month on two Thursday evenings 6-9pm at the Alva Neal Community Center next to the Franklin Boys & Girls Club.
When do I need to attend the program?
The class needs to be completed within 60 days from the day it is ordered. Registration fills quickly.
What do our clients think?
- Parents:
“It helped me to better communicate with my spouse and children.”
“Because both parents have to attend this class, we’ll be on the same page.” - Children:
“I learned that others are going through the same thing.”
“It was nice to just talk to other kids my age that are going through the divorce.”
