Options for Shelter
Host Homes are caring volunteer families or individuals that agree to open their hearts and homes to a local youth in need. The Host Home acts as an emergency shelter, a safe haven, and a mentor, for the youth until they can be reunited with their own family or moved to a more permanent housing arrangement; Host Home families can host a youth in need for up to 21 days in Marion. Morgan, Johnson, or Brown County.
Youth Connections partners with many local agencies to provide shelter to youth when needed. We partner with Safe Families, Childrens Bureau, and many more. While in the shelter YC will continue to work with the youth and family with the goal of reuniting the family.
Who Needs Help
Children and youth, generally 7-17 years old, who are in need of a temporary shelter due to a family emergency or who have become homeless, have run away to one of our Safe Place sites, been thrown away or locked out, need a Host Home. The Host Homes program is a last resort for these youth before the streets. Often children and youth in the program have:
- “couch surfed” from home to home
- Run away from home due to untenable circumstances
- Been forced to leave by their parents
Youth who are under the influence of drugs or have a history of violence are not eligible for the program.
Once a youth completes our preliminary screening, we will contact an available Host Home for placement. Once in the home, the youth will attend school and participate in everyday living with the Host Home family. We will stay in regular contact with the Host Home, youth, and guardians of the youth, to develop an individualized support plan and pursue reconciliation or other necessary services. After the agreed upon length of stay, the youth will be moved to more permanent housing and be connected to ongoing community support as needed.
How to Become a Host Home
Any caring household in Brown, Johnson or Morgan County can apply to become a Host Home volunteer. We offer support to households in completing their application, interview and background check process. If selected, you will receive an orientation and training prior to hosting a youth.
